Here are a few of our frequently asked questions.
However, if these don't answer your queries please contact
us.
How do I get started?
Contact the membership secretary
for details about events or visit the events page on the website for
information about trips. Then contact the organiser and sign up for
one of our many events.
Can I try canoeing
out before joining?
We allow you to participate
in three activities before we request that you join Purley Canoe Club.
This gives you the chance to try out a kayak in the pool and perhaps
go on a flat-water river trip.
What clothing do I
need?
If you are attending a pool
session, then all you need bring is a towel, swimming trunks/costume
and perhaps a tee-shirt.
If you are going on a river
trip, then wear old clothes that you don't mind getting wet. You will
also need a change of clothes. Footwear should consist of plimsolls
or similar.
In winter, you will need a
woolly hat and fleece and a layer of thermal clothing is useful.
The Club can sometimes provide
cagoules, wetsuits and wetsuit boots.
What equipment do I
need?
You don't need to get any equipment
as this can usually be provided by the Club, for a small hire fee
£5.00 adults and £3.00 children. Eventually, you may wish
to purchase items such as a cagoule or even splash out on a new or
second-hand boat. Some equipment can be expensive and it is useful
to see what equipment Club members use before buying. Club membership
allows you 10% discount with certain shops
Is there any age limit
and do you welcome families?
We do not have an age limit.
Many adults get involved with their children and go on trips together
as a family. Children under 10 must always be accompanied by a parent
or guardian.
Do you provide coaching?
Yes, we have BCU qualified
coaches and can provide coaching in kayaks and open canoes. The first
stage is BCU 1 star award. This normally starts with practicing during
pool sessions and on river trips. We provide training and assessment,
for Club Members, from 1 to 4 star awards in kayak and 1 to 2 star
awards in open boating at our star training days. The BCU award scheme
goes up to 5 star awards.
We also provide training and
assessments for other BCU awards, for Club Members, e.g. First Aid,
Safety Test, Coaching Courses.
What activities does
the Club do?
We are primarily a flat-water
club, but we also have sea and white-water trips for the more adventurous.
Whether you want to paddle lazily along a river in an open canoe spotting
wildlife or fancy a rush of adrenaline on a white-water trip, we will
have something to suit all levels of experience.
